Background:

The first Rector of the Parish of St. George's was a Loyalist and missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Ranna Cossit (1744-1815). He arrived in Sydney in 1786 and soon erected a parsonage. In 1791 the Parish of Saint George was created. Work on St. George's Church was begun in 1787 and completed by 1805.

Contents:
Reel 1 contains a general return of marriages, births and deaths for the Parish of St. George's, 1785-1827. Reel 2 has two separate sections: Book A includes lists of marriages, published banns, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, burials, church wardens, and even detailed collection and expenditure records, 1785-1813. The registers and records in this part of the reel are not arranged in any consistent chronological order. The remainder of the second reel is organized as follows: baptisms, 1813-1837, 1828-1849, 1852-1929; marriages, 1813-1853, 1853-1928; and burials, 1813-1883, 1878-1923.
