Letter Book copies of correspondence from Governor, later Lieutenant Governor, Thomas Carleton (1735-1817), to officials of the British Government in London. Carleton held the title of Governor from 1784 to 1786, but in that year the title was changed to Lieutenant Governor. In 1803 he returned to Britain on permanent leave, but retained the position until his death in 1817. From 1803 until 1817, when the new Lieutenant Governor Martin Stracey-Smith was appointed, several Administrators were appointed by the King to oversee the administration of the colony. The Letter Books include the correspondence of these Administrators.
- Contents:
Thomas Carleton's correspondence with the British government is extensive. He reports to various officials, including Lord Sydney, the Duke of Portland, the Earl of Liverpool, and many others. Included are reports on expenses incurred by the Province; appointments; trade; customs; the fishery boundaries; surveys of different areas of the colony; and the progress of settlement. He refers to transmitting to London the Adjutant's Muster Rolls of the King's New Brunswick Regiment as well as the Pay Lists and Muster Rolls of the Paymaster. The Bills enacted, along with the Journals of the Legislative Council and of the Assembly, are referred to as being forwarded "as usual without loss of time." In a letter of 25 April 1785, he informs Lord Sydney that he has chosen a site for the future seat of the Provincial Government and has named it Fredericktown in honour of His Royal Highness the Duke of York. When referring to New Brunswick, the term Province or Provincial is used throughout.
