| Background: |
Unlike the despatches from the Colonial Office to the Governors and Lieutenant Governors of Upper Canada, Lower Canada and Prince Edward Island, which were transferred to the Governor General's Office at the time of Confederation, most of the Nova Scotia despatches were retained in the Province and are now in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia. A few volumes did make their way into the Records of the Governor General's Office and were later transferred to the Public Archives of Canada in 1904.

This small collection contains miscellaneous memoranda and despatches from the Colonial Office, the British Minister in Washington and other sources. The documents pertain chiefly to political and constitutional affairs. They include registers of early correspondence, 1788-1790, and schedules of despatches between 1855 and 1867.
