The Ashburton-Webster Treaty (Treaty of Washington) signed on 9 August 1842 was negotiated by Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton of Great Britain, and Daniel Webster, the Secretary of State of the United States. It established the boundary between New Brunswick and Maine, which had been left in doubt following the Treaty of Ghent. |

Report of the Commissioners under the Resolves of May 26, 1842 In Relation to the Northeastern Boundary of this State. Augusta: Wm. R. Smith, 1843, is a printed, typescript document submitted to John Fairfield, Governor of Maine, from the Maine Commissioners to the Boundary Commission which negotiated the Ashburton-Webster Treaty.The Report is followed by an Appendix containing twelve numbered documents. Numbers 1-10 and Number 12 are copies of correspondence between Lord Ashburton and Mr. Webster, and between the Maine and Massachusetts Commissioners and Mr. Webster. Document Number 11 is entitled Articles of the Treaty as Finally Concluded and Ratified in Relation to the Boundary. |
