Background:

Marriage bonds were posted by two bondsmen affirming that there was no legal impediment to a marriage to be performed by licence. Persons who wished to marry following the publication of banns in a parish church did not require a licence and therefore were not required to post bonds.

Contents:

The Upper Canada Marriage Bonds are arranged alphabetically within each year by the groom's surname with accompanying correspondence, licences and other documentation, e.g. a statement of the bride's age or parental permission for a daughter to marry.
