- Background:
In 1787 Reverend John Bethune (1751-1815) began his ministry to members of the disbanded 84th Regiment, also known as the Royal Highland Emigrants, and other Highlanders who had settled in the western part of Quebec. The area later became Glengarry County, Upper Canada. He established St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Williamstown and served there until his death in 1815.
