The Collector of Customs' material consists of the following: 

Reel 1- Letterbook, 1784-1799; ship registry book, 1787-1825; shipping inwards, entry books, 1790-1826 (4 vols.)

Reel 2- Import ledgers, 1829-1830 (1 vol.); shipping outwards, all points 1802-1827 (6 vols.); and account books of duties, seizures, incidents and remittances, 1818-1829 (3 vols.)

The ship registry book gives detailed information for vessels built and registered in the Island of St. John during this period. Included is the date and place where the vessel was built and registered, the owner's name/s with the place of residence and occupation, the vessel's name and principal harbour, the master's name, and complete details regarding the size and type of vessel.

Likewise, the entry books for shipping both inwards and outwards provide considerable detail regarding the vessels and their cargoes. Included is the name of the vessel, where built and registered, type of vessel and tonnage, names of both the master and the owners, date of arrival at and departure from port, and precise information regarding the nature of the cargo and its value.
