Background:

When Prince Edward Island entered Confederation in 1873, the Lieutenant Governor transferred the accumulated pre-Confederation correspondence with the Colonial Office to the Governor General's office. In 1904 these Records were moved to the Public Archives of Canada.

Contents:
The documents include Despatches from the Colonial Office to the Lieutenant Governors of Prince Edward Island, together with Letterbook copies of Despatches forwarded to the Colonial Office.

The records are organized in the following manner:

Despatches Received, Volumes 1-42 (1771-1873), include circular, military, private and confidential despatches and enclosures from the Secretary of State for the Colonies;Despatches Sent, Volumes 43-53, 58-67 (1813-1873), contain letterbooks and copies of despatches, including enclosures, to the Colonial Secretary;

Despatches Received from the Governor General, British Minister at Washington, Lieutenant Governors of the Provinces and the War Office, Volumes 68-71 (1855-1868);

Imperial Orders in Council, Volumes 72-73 (1769-1867); andRegisters of Despatches Received, Volumes 74-75 (1771-1868).
