Background:

This Collection of postal materials originated in the Queenston Post Office of Alexander Hamilton and illustrates many aspects of the operations of a pioneer post office in Upper Canada.

Collection consists of copies of documents, compiled by Percy C. Band, relating to post offices in Upper Canada, 1782-1874. Collection includes stampless covers and correspondence amongst post office officials. (Archives of Ontario)

The Collection is organised in the following manner: post office printed material; letters about postal matters; stampless covers arranged in alphabetical order by post office in - Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, New York and England; and miscellaneous; and unclassified correspondence discussing, for example, the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837. Besides postal administration, subjects of interest would include communications, and local history and place names.
