Background:

John Strachan came from Aberdeen, Scotland to Upper Canada in 1799 and taught school in Kingston and Cornwall. In 1803 he took orders in the Church of England and was appointed rector of Cornwall. In 1812 he became rector of York (Toronto). Strachan was also involved in the political affairs of Upper Canada as a member of both the executive council and the legislative council. He became the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Toronto in 1839, and was the founder of the University of King's College in 1843, later the University of Toronto, and the University of Trinity College, Toronto, in 1852.

Contents:
The Papers contain letters to Rev. John Strachan from Rev. James Brown in Scotland; Strachan's correspondence with Bishop Jacob Mountain (1749-1828) of Québec, and with Archdeacon George Jehoshaphat Mountain (1789-1863), Bishop Mountain's son, in Québec and Montreal; and letters to Bishop Mountain from William Morice and Anthony Hamilton, secretaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.

The Papers also include a Return of Marriages Solemnized in Toronto, 1858, and a petition to the Bishop of Toronto for a new parish (All Saints), 1869, of Strachan Papers which is located in the Loyalist Collection at MIC-Loyalist FC LFR .S7J6P3. 479
