- Background:
Solomon Jones lived near Fort Edward, New York before the American Revolution and attended medical school in Albany. He served with the Loyalist forces as a surgeon's mate and treated Loyalists in various refugee camps in Quebec. After the Revolution, he received a large tract of land in Augusta Township, which was then the western part of Quebec, where he farmed and continued with the practice of medicine. From 1788, when he received his first appointment as surgeon to the local militia, until his death in 1822, he held a number of civic offices. The reel contains the papers of Solomon Jones (1756-1822) and includes: correspondence, both public and private, 1795-1830; accounts and receipts, 1785-1859, with some material relevant to his son Dunham; documents relating to his role as commissioner of the peace, 1801-1808, and as commissioner of highways, 1800-1806; legal and business papers, 1798-1820; militia papers, 1832, 1838-1839, principally Captain Dunham Jones's company, 1st Regiment, Grenville Militia; miscellaneous items; and biographical material, notably Reminiscences, by Andrew Jones, grandson of Solomon. The correspondence includes letters to Dr. Jones from the Hon. D.W. Smith (1764-1837), Thomas Rideout (1754-1829), Richard Cartwright (1759-1815), Rev. George Okill Stuart (1776-1862), and eight letters from John Strachan (1778-1867) of Cornwall where the sons of Solomon Jones attended Strachan's grammar school.
