Background:
The original correspondence between New Brunswick and the British Colonial Office for the years 1853-1854 is recorded in four volumes. The material is separated into three categories; Despatches, Public Offices, and Individuals or Miscellaneous.

The Despatches contain the original correspondence between the Lieutenant Governors and other officials, and the British Secretary of State for the Colonies. The Lieutenant Governors during this period were, Sir Edmund Walker Head and J.H.T. Manners-Sutton.

The Public Offices category contains British interdepartmental communications arranged in alphabetical order under the name of the office concerned.

The Individuals or Miscellaneous category contains correspondence with individuals, both public and private, and frequently with companies or associations. This material is arranged alphabetically by name and chronologically by date of issue or receipt.

Colonial Office 188/120 contains Despatches from June until December of 1853. A few additional Despatches with dates ranging from June until August of 1853 are on a previous reel which is not part of the Loyalist Collection. The Public Offices and Individuals categories in Volume 120 are complete for the year 1853. Colonial Office 188/121-123 are complete volumes.

The Despatches include correspondence between the Lieutenant Governors and the Colonial Secretary's Office, often with enclosures; abstracts of executive council minutes; copies of Acts; transmitted copies of letters on many subjects; reports of the provincial treasurer; proclamations; statistics; newspaper reports of debates in the House of Assembly; and many other items.

The Public Offices category includes communications from the Admiralty, Board of Trade, Privy Council, Foreign Office, Treasury, Colonial Office and other departments of the British government.

The Individuals or Miscellaneous category contains, among others, communications regarding the Post Office, Society of Arts, British and North American Great Railway Land Company, and with numerous individuals.

Volume 21 has two chronological schedules at the beginning of the volume.
