Background:

Dr. James Hannay was asked by the Minister of Agriculture to examine and prepare a Report on the Historical Material in the Maritime Provinces Available for a History of Canada. One of the reasons for selecting Nova Scotia, in the Minister's view, was that it was "the mother colony of the Maritime Provinces."

Contents:
Reel 1: Volumes 1 and 2 are entitled Hannay's Reports, 1903-1908 and are a partial calendar of the contents of the Provincial Archives of Nova Scotia. Included are: county information; newspapers; books; pamphlets; manuscripts; the Akins Collection; Prince Edward Island documents; St. Paul's Church (Anglican) Parish Books; the Dodd Papers; military letter books and order books; maps and plans; Crown Land Office records; Charles LaTour documents; Index to Papers Relating to Nova Scotia Loyalists; military archives in Halifax; and papers relating to the Intercolonial Railway.

Volume 3 is entitled Hannay's Report on Parish Registers (1908).

Reel 2: Volume 4. Inscriptions on tombstones, 1709-1917. The records in this volume are arranged alphabetically by town as follows: Bridgetown, Brooklyn, Caledonia, Port Medway, Chester, Chipman's Corner, Clementsport, Cornwallis, Digby, Falmouth, Grand Pre, Lower Granville, Granville, Kentville, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Milton, Mount Denson, Newport, Shelburne, Wilmot and Wolfville.
