Background:

Treasury 50 consists of 97 volumes of pay lists, receipts, and other papers connected with payments made by the British government to various refugees, i.e. American, Breton, Norman, Spanish, Toulonese, Corsican, Maltese, Polish, Dutch, and Santo Domingan, between 1780 and 1856. Only the first 56 volumes of this class relate to American Loyalists.

Contents:

Volumes 1-5 (1780-1782) include pay lists, receipt books and abstracts of pay for the North and South Carolina militia regiments and for refugees in Charleston. Names, ranks, rates of pay, places of service, memorials, letters, certificates and other personal information is included.

Volumes 6-28 (1781-1831) are ledgers of temporary allowances paid to Loyalist claimants and include detailed personal information.

Volume 29 is a book of payments to Loyalists in 1783 by Samuel Remnant by order of the Treasury.

Volume 30 (1789-1795) is a record of payments for relief of American Loyalists and other sufferers by the secession of East Florida to Spain.

Volumes 31-48 (1788-1839) contain Loyalists' quarterly pension lists.

Volumes 49-52 (1810-1830) are more entry books and accounts of payments made to Loyalists.

Volume 53 (1816) is a statement of the case of 55 Loyalists whose claims were regarded as just but referred, without result, to the USA for payment.

Volume 54 (1830-1834) are annual accounts concerning American, St. Domingo and Dutch.

Volume 55 (1834) are annual accounts for American, St. Domingo, Dutch, Maltese and Toulonese.

Volume 56 (1832-1835) are allowances (alphabetical) for American, St. Domingo and Dutch.
