New Brunswick. Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace (Charlotte County).
Material Description:
1 microfilm textual records (2 volumes) ; 35 mm
Background:

Charlotte County was one of the eight original counties which were established after New Brunswick was formed in 1784. During the period covered by this Minute Book, the county was divided into the following parishes: Pennfield, St. Andrews, Saint David, Saint George, Saint Patrick, St. Stephen, West Isles, Campobello, Grand Manan, and Saint James. The Sessions Court functioned as the local government body with both judicial and administrative authority in the county.

Contents:

The Minutes of the Court record the proceedings, and include lists of the presiding justices and grand jury members; detailed court proceedings for offences such as assault and larceny; proclamations; lists of local office holders; orders; tax assessments for schools, the poor, the county debt, maintenance of jails and all other expenses; assignment of road work; petitions from individuals; a record of public expenditures; requests for payment for services rendered; a long list of Absent Proprietors, St. Davids 1788, and other lists of names such as the list of Delinquents Statute Labor for the Parish of St. Andrews, 1786/1787.

The reel contains two volumes of Minutes: Book A, 1785-1815, and Book B, 1815-1834. The books are not indexed. At the beginning of the reel, the Index to Records of the Municipality of Charlotte, appears not to relate to the General Sessions Minute Books.

A third very early county court record book has been microfilmed at the end of the reel. The Docket Book of the Charlotte County General Sessions of the Peace for 1785 and 1786 contains the names of defendants, the charge, the verdict, and the penalty imposed by the court.
