- Background:
Sunbury County is one of the eight original counties established in 1784 when New Brunswick was formed from the western part of Nova Scotia. The original parishes were Burton, Lincoln, Sheffield and Maugerville. The Parish of Blissfield was set off from Burton and Lincoln in 1834. Northfield was created in 1857, and Gladstone was set off from Blissville in 1874.
The County was incorporated with an elective council in 1856. The Sessions Court met at the Court House in Burton.

The Minutes record the proceedings of the Court and include the names of presiding Justices and Grand Jury members; detailed accounts of Court proceedings for criminal cases; lists of persons appointed as local officials; tax assessments; statements of public expenditures; petitions from individuals; school certificates; licenses; requests for payment from individuals for services rendered; assignments of road work; and many other matters, both civil and criminal, which came before the Court.
