- Background:
The first courts in what was to become Upper Canada were established in 1788 with the creation of the Court of Common Pleas, the Prerogative Court, and a Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace for each of the four Districts, which were named Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nassau and Hesse. As the population increased, the Districts were subdivided until there were 20, and one Territorial District by 1849. The Minutes for the London District begin in 1800, and are available in the Loyalist Collection for 1800-1809.

The Minutes contain orders of the Court concerning roads; constables; destitute persons; oaths; appointments; assessments; and many other civil and criminal matters.
The microfilm contains additional but related records which include:
Note Book of Proceedings in the Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace - for the Clerk of the Peace, July 1839 - July 1840;
Chairman's Note Books, April 1847 - November 1848; and
Statements of Issues, fines, etc., 3 September 1821 - 12 October 1831.This microfilm consists of minutebooks which largely concern the court's judicial function. There are no schedules of accounts or lists of tavern applications until 1845 (December Sessions). There are, however, orders of the court regarding roads, constables, payments from accounts, destitute persons, oaths, appointments, non-conformist ministers, assessments, and, the courthouse and gaol. There are gaps in the minutes for October 1832, April 1833, 1810 - October, 1813, and, 1821 - 1829. (Archives of Ontario)
