The Minutes of the Executive and Legislative Councils of Prince Edward Island are arranged in chronological order and contain a wealth of information on every facet of life during this period.

A few examples of the material that can be found include: lists of appointments made by the Lieutenant Governor and by the Council; correspondence between the Governor and the Council; references to circular letters and copies of Acts which have arrived from the British government; reports of commissions appointed for various tasks, e.g. the collection of small debts; statements of annual provincial revenue and expenditure; petitions for payment from those who have rendered services to the government; return of labour performed under the Overseer's jurisdiction; lists of warrants issued for the payment of accounts; lists of licenced teachers with the annual salary paid to each (some lists contain the location where the person is the resident teacher); petitions for land grants and licences of occupation.

Many petitions of Loyalists appear in the early volumes. Other records also pertain to the settlement of Loyalists, e.g. a record of tools, nails, etc. in government stores to be given to Loyalists.

The Loyalist Collection contains only the first 20 volumes, 1770-1881, of the Prince Edward Island Executive Council and Legislative Council Minutes. The complete series of records extend in time from 1770 to 1959.
