Background:

A journal kept by a British soldier of the 47th Regiment relating to military activities at Boston, Ticonderoga and Saratoga. The Journal is incomplete but covers the period from 18 April 1775 - 10 January 1779.

The Journal contains a list of the British regiments in Boston, 19 April 1775; information on troop movements; battle preparations; lists of persons killed and wounded, by rank, for particular periods or after an engagement; numbers of rebels killed and wounded; lists of guns and equipment seized and prisoners taken; conditions of terrain; descriptions of battles; return of rank and file fit for duty at various periods, including Provincials, Germans and Indians; general orders; distribution and location of regiments in winter quarters; list of rebel fleet on Lake Champlain under Benedict Arnold, 12 October 1776; list of vessels taken and destroyed, 6 July 1777; return of ordnance; and messages between the British Lieutenant-General Burgoyne and the American Major-General Gates negotiating the British surrender at Saratoga.
