Background:

Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, was the son of Thomas, 1st Lord Pelham. He added the name of Holles, from his mother's family, to those of Pelham in 1711 and succeeded as 2nd Baron Pelham in 1712. He was created Viscount Pelham and Earl of Clare in 1714, and Duke of Newcastle in 1715. His political career spanned a period of over fifty years, from the reign of Queen Anne until George 111, during which time he was twice the Prime Minister of Great Britain. In his second term of office during the Seven Years War, he headed a coalition with William Pitt, later 1st Earl of Chatham, who became Secretary of State. While Pitt directed the war with great success, Newcastle secured the parliamentary support for their administration. Following a long and distinguished political career he died at his home on 17 November 1768.
