Background:

The name Cumberland was given to the captured Fort Beausejour on June 18, 1755, by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Monckton. The Fort was named in honour of the son of King George II, the Duke of Cumberland. The name was given to both the County and the Township in 1759.

Contents:
The microfilm reel contains Minutes of Town Meetings for both the Town of Cumberland, 1780-1787, and the Town of Fort Lawrence, 1788-1879. The Cumberland Minutes include a public notice and an agenda for the meeting, followed by a brief record of proceedings. The Minutes for the Town of Fort Lawrence cover a period of almost one hundred years, but many years are missing.

Originals:

The original records were at one time located at Fort Beausejour Historic Park, but were later placed under the jurisdiction of the Parks Canada office in Halifax.
