Background:

Captain John Ashton Shuttleworth received his first commission as an ensign in the 13th Regiment of Foot on 10 December 1771. The Regiment was serving in Minorca at that time. He was promoted to Lieutenant in the 7th Regiment of Foot, or the Royal Fusiliers, on 20 May 1772, and to Captain in the same regiment on 10 June 1778. The preceding information was located in the British Annual Army Lists.

The letters of Captain John Shuttleworth were written at Quebec where he was serving with the Royal Fusiliers. Entries in the fourth letter book show that he had returned to London for reasons of health. The letter books contain copies of correspondence, both received and sent, that concern military and personal affairs, and gives insight into Quebec in this time period.

A few examples include: numerous financial accounts; letter from Sgt. Thomas Clarke, asking for help with a pardon for taking improper steps to obtain redress for an inquiry, includes his regimental background, as well as character reference from Shuttleworth, 1791; detailed lists of clothing and uniforms for officers at Quebec, with name and rank; orders for: materials for clothing, swords and accoutrements addressed to London merchants, within mentions agents in London, Misters Cox and Greenwood, and Mr. Dickey as army clothier, 1791-2; pay accounts; detailed directions for the alteration of the helmets of officers, sergeants, musicians and drummers of the Royal Fusiliers sent on board the Caroline, 23 October 1792; orders transmitted on behalf of His Royal Highness Prince Edward for the Officers of the Royal Fusiliers in London to join the Regiment in Quebec; many letters to His Royal Highness Prince Edward; and numerous other records of interest.
