1 microfilm textual records 35 mm
Background:

Edward DeWolf was the son of Nathan DeWolf and Lydia Kirkland who came to Horton Township, Kings County, Nova Scotia from Connecticut in 1761 as Planters.

Nathan DeWolf was a lawyer, a justice of the peace, and registrar of probates. Elisha DeWolf, Edward's brother, became a judge and a prominent citizen of Upper Horton, Nova Scotia. In 1829 the town was officially renamed, Wolfville, in honour of the DeWolf family. Edward DeWolf appears to have been a merchant at Horton Landing, which is located a few miles east of Wolfville.

Contents:

The business records kept by Edward DeWolf take the form of two ledgers that list daily transactions for goods purchased, amounts charged and payments made on account. Each customer's record is maintained separately, with the name of the individual in large handwriting at the top of the page, or at the beginning of their particular section of a ledger.

The quality of the microfilm reproduction is very poor. On some pages the name of the person is the only writing that is legible. Even this information could be useful to researchers, for it reveals the names of people who were living in the area at that time. The goods that could be purchased were typical of the supplies that were handled by general merchants of the day, including: food stuffs, dry goods, hardware, timber, flour, rice, ship bread, rum, and many other items.

Originals:

The original records are held by the Nova Scotia Archives.

Archival Ref. No.:

NSA MG 3 Vol. 233, 234.

Finding Aids:

An alphabetically arranged nominal index is located at the beginning of the first ledger.

It is possible to read most of this ledger and follow the page references to the proper entry. The index for the second ledger is too faint to be read.

Notes:

The quality of the microfilm is poor.

The name DeWolf is spelled DeWolfe by some branches of the family.
