Background:

Stephen Skinner was a Loyalist and general merchant in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, immediately after the American Revolution. Skinner was also one of the contractors who supervised the building of a lighthouse on McNutt Island in Shelburne Harbour. Before the Revolution, he had held the office of treasurer of eastern New Jersey and was a member of the council. His brother, Cortland Skinner, was the last royal attorney-general of New Jersey, and after the outbreak of the American Revolution, he was commissioned by the British government to raise a Loyalist regiment, the New Jersey Volunteers, which he commanded with the rank of brigadier-general throughout the war. Oliver Delancey was his first cousin.

The ledger of Stephen Skinner, merchant, contains accounts, lists of goods, bills of exchange and other records. At the end of the film there is a list of the property Skinner owned in Nova Scotia and a list of lands purchased from Black persons of Birchtown, Nova Scotia.
