Category:
Military
Creator:
Great Britain. Army. Provincial Corps.
Material Description:
1 microfilm textual records 35 mm
Background:

This muster roll of the 1st Battalion, King's Royal Regiment of New York, commanded by Sir John Johnson during the American Revolution. The Muster Roll is a copy of the original which at the time of transcription, in what appears to be 1802, was in the possession of Jacob Farrand Pringle of Cornwall, Ontario.

Considerable effort was made by Gavin Watt and Kathryn Hilder to arrive at the date of the original muster roll, and it was concluded that the most probable date was late in 1782. The information contained in the Muster Roll was incorporated into the Master Muster Roll, which was compiled by Gavin Watt, and included in his revised edition of Ernest Cruickshank's, History of the King's Royal Regiment of New York. This revised edition, augmented with an Index, Appendices, and Master Muster Roll, was published in 1984.

Contents:

The Muster Roll of the King's Royal Regiment of New York is entitled, A Return of the Country and Age of the Non-Commissioned Officers, Drummers and Privates of the First Battalion of the King's Royal Regiment of New York whereof Sir John Johnson Knight and Baronet is Lieutenant Colonel Commanding. The Return is arranged by company, and the order in which the companies have been microfilmed may not reflect the order in the original document.

The arrangement on the microfilm is as follows: Colonel's Company (Sir John Johnson); Major's Company (James Gray); Captain James Munro's; Captain Patrick Daly's; Captain Joseph Anderson's; Captain Richard Duncan's; Captain Samuel Anderson's Light Company; Captain John McDonell's Company of Grenadiers; Captain Alexander McDonell's Campany; and Captain Angus McDonell's Company.

On same reel and filed under: FC LFR .S3F3P3.

Originals:

The original records are held by Library and Archives Canada.

Archival Ref. No.:

LAC RG 19, vol. 4447, file 2-2.

Notes:

The document was located in 1979 in the Public Records Division of the National Archives of Canada by Kathryn Hilder, a reference librarian and the librarian in charge of the Loyalist Collection at the University of New Brunswick. With the permission of the National Archives of Canada, the University of New Brunswick Library produced a microfilm copy of the muster roll from the photocopy which the National Archives had made for Kathryn Hilder in 1979.

The microfilm copy is very faint. Because the quality of the film reproduction is poor, an enhanced print copy has been made from the microfilm and accompanies this Inventory entry.

Other With:

Microfilmed on the same reel with the Schaffer/Shaver Family Papers, 1804-1874 in Family Records section at FC LFR .S3F3P3.
