- Background:
This muster roll of the 1st Battalion, King's Royal Regiment of New York, commanded by Sir John Johnson during the American Revolution, was located in 1979 in the Public Records Division of the National Archives of Canada by Kathryn Hilder, a reference librarian and the librarian in charge of the Loyalist Collection at the University of New Brunswick. The Muster Roll is a copy of the original which at the time of transcription, in what appears to be 1802, was in the possession of Jacob Farrand Pringle of Cornwall, Ontario. Considerable effort was made by Gavin Watt and Kathryn Hilder to arrive at the date of the original muster roll, and it was concluded that the most probable date was late in 1782. The information contained in the Muster Roll was incorporated into the Master Muster Roll, which was compiled by Gavin Watt, and included in his revised edition of Ernest Cruickshank's,History of the King's Royal Regiment of New York. This revised edition, augmented with an Index, Appendices, and Master Muster Roll, was published in 1984. With the permission of the National Archives of Canada, the University of New Brunswick Library produced a microfilm copy of the muster roll from the photocopy which the National Archives had made for Kathryn Hilder in 1979.
