In 1758 an elected legislative assembly was established in Nova Scotia. The first in Canada, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly convened on 2 October 1758 in the law courts at Halifax. From 1758 to 1928 the Assembly was the lower house of a bicameral legislature. Since 1848 and responsible government, the party holding the largest number of seats in the Assembly forms the government of the province. The role of the Assembly lies to enact the statute law of the province, both public and private.

Journals provide a record of activity in the House and record the motions and proceedings, but not the debates.
Included in this microfilm copy of the published Journals are: proclamations; addresses to and messages from the Lieutenant Governor; communications from the Council; resolutions; treasurer's accounts; bills; reports from committees; and a record of all other items of business that came before the House.
