The brig, Garland, of 299 tons, was owned by C. Logan and Company of Liverpool, England. The Journal is the daily log of a voyage in 1833 from Liverpool to the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, and was kept by the captain of the vessel, John Murray. It gives a detailed description of life at sea during a voyage under sail across the North Atlantic ocean in the first half of the 19th century. Each day's entry usually amounts to one half page, and mentions wind direction and strength, sea heights, speed of the vessel, distance covered, lighthouses and other landmarks passed, configuration of sails carried, air and water temperatures, latitude and longitude, vessels seen, barometer readings, and descriptions of weather conditions. The entries end with a few lines of poetry.

The original Journal was presented to the City of Liverpool Reference Library (Liverpool Central Library - Archives) by Captain E.A. Woods, circa 1937.
