- Background:
In 1985, the Archives of Ontario published its first, Guide to the Holdings of the Archives of Ontario. It was edited by Barbara Craig and Richard W. Ramsey and reflected the holdings of the Archives at the time of publication. Although there have been innumerable additions to the Archives' holdings and the rearrangement of some records since that time, the Guide remains a useful and important source of reference for researchers, especially those at a distance from Toronto.
- Contents:
In the introduction to the Guide, the editors state that comprehensive entries have been prepared for all records accessioned by the Archives and held by the Government Records and Private Manuscript Sections as of 31 December 1982.
With a few exceptions, the Guide is arranged in four parts: an introduction, including an alphabetical list of Record Groups; entries for the holdings of the Government Records Section; entries for the holdings of the Private Records Section; and an Index at the end of Volume 2. Every entry gives standardized information about the origin, nature, context, and subjects that relate to that entry. Government records have been batched and entered in record group number sequence, while entries are arranged alphabetically in the Private Manuscript Section. There is a further alphabetical breakdown within the Cemetery Records Collection, the Church Records Collection (CRC), and the Local Histories Collection. Each entry has been assigned a unique control number, which is used as a reference point, and the Guide has been printed in this numbered order. Entries have been indexed by subject, and all subject references refer to the entry code of the appropriate group, series, collection, or other unit of the original entry
The following information is found within the body of each entry: the number of the record group; title of the record group or private manuscript unit; restrictions, if any; volume of records or number of reels; references to finding aids; introductory information about the group, series, collection, or papers; and general or series description of the material. Series which have been microfilmed are given an MS designation. For a more detailed description of the Guide, researchers should consult the Introduction which is located at the beginning of Volume 1.
