Background:

Colonial Office 227 does not follow the usual arrangement for colony class entry books. The basic categories of Despatches, Public Offices and Miscellaneous or Individuals do not appear. The arrangement is basically a chronological organization.

Contents:

The records include copies of despatches, commissions, and instructions which were communicated to the colony by the Board of Trade and later by the Secretary of State, and the office responsible for colonial affairs. A few in-letters from governors are included as well.

Originals:

The original documents are held by the Public Record Office in London, now The National Archives, Kew. Library and Archives Canada holds a microfilm copy.

Volumes 1 and 7-12 include internal indexes giving date, authors, and a brief subject description.
