1 microfilm textual records 35 mm

Benjamin Smith was a farmer in Ancaster Township, Wentworth County, Ontario.

Contents:

The Benjamin Smith Diaries are a daily record of farm life and work during the early years of settlement in Upper Canada. Family members, neighbors, and friends are mentioned, along with a consistent record of weather conditions. Several portions of the diaries have been transcribed, and these have been included in the microfilm. Many pages of the original text are clear and readable on the microfilm, but there are, unfortunately, several sections which are too faint or overexposed to be read.

The Diary of Captain R.E. Vidal, 1835, is microfilmed on the same reel with the Benjamin Smith Diaries. Captain Vidal was a Sarnia area farmer and boat builder.

Originals:

The original records are held by the Archives of Ontario.

Archival Ref. No.:

AO MS 199. Consists of typed transcriptions of the diaries in F 582, Benjamin Smith fonds.
