Background:

Judith (Jenkins) Smith was the daughter of John Jenkins, a Loyalist who served in the Revolutionary War and the wife of Richard Smith(1778-1833), the eldest son of Captain Jacob Smith (1749-1837), of 1st Delancey's Brigade. Jacob Smith was one of the first settlers in the area which was to become the town of Woodstock, New Brunswick. When Richard Smith died in 1833, all his land passed to his wife Judith, with the proviso that most surveyed lots could only be leased. Consequently, the development of the north side of Woodstock was determined, in part, by the terms of Richard's will. This will was registered and signed by Bartholomew Crannel Beardsley, surrogate and judge of probates for Carleton County, and the husband of Judith's sister Mary. In 1837 Judith married Captain Frederick Morehouse, a militia officer, who took his own life five years after their marriage. Judith Morehouse lived for another 20 years and died in December, 1857. On 16 April 1860 the Morehouse mansion was destroyed by fire.
