The American Revolution Collection held by the Connecticut Historical Society consists of letters, journals, orderly books, commissary accounts, and muster rolls for the period, 1765-1844. However, most of the records concern the time period of the American Revolution. While the vast majority of the records were created by officers, soldiers, and others connected with the Continental Army, the material is still significant for any study of military activities during the American Revolution, including Loyalist research. By closely examining the American military records it is often possible to read through them, as it were, and ascertain the activities of British regular forces and Loyalist provincial corps during the same period of time.

In addition to gaining information by indirect means, there are records which relate directly to the British army and to the Loyalists. These include: maps; negotiations for the exchange of prisoners; records for the sale of land confiscated from Loyalists; a journal kept by a British prisoner of war at Hartford, Connecticut, from 1 January until 12 September 1776; a British orderly book kept by J. Waller between 1775 and circa 1783; and an orderly book of a British lieutenant and adjutant, possibly J. Waller, at Boston from 27 January to 16 March 1775, and again at Halifax from 4 April 1776 to 31 March 1777.
