Background:

A brief description of the Alley-Smith Collection was written at the time the original records were being prepared for microfilming and can be found at the beginning of the reel. It states that Judge George Alley was Acting Secretary of the Charlottetown Historical Society and Henry Smith was Clerk of the County Court and Chairman of the Charlottetown School Board. This miscellaneous group of papers was collected by them around the end of the nineteenth century.

The Collection includes petitions and memorials from groups of Loyalists and disbanded soldiers, with their names attached, and from individual petitioners who are requesting lands and assistance.

Included are the following names: Thomas Haszard, Joseph Robinson, Cornelius Rhodes, Benjamin Grovenor, John Coxen, Calib Sentner, Nicholas Coonohan, John Robinson, Captain Alexander McMillan, and Peter Macgowan, who was Deputy Secretary and Registrar of the Island.

Other documents include: a list of grantees, which was issued between 1795 and 1800, with the lot number, fees paid, and the number of acres assigned to each grantee; petitions to the House of Assembly on behalf of Loyalists and disbanded troops for redress of grievances; a list of Loyalists and disbanded troops, arranged by lot number, who settled in Prince Edward Island, 1784; and a Report of Service of Lt. Col. Joseph Robinson of the late South Carolina Royalists to the Secretary of State at War, Charlottetown, 26 April 1797.
