- Background:
John Saunders was a well-to-do Loyalist from Virginia whose property was confiscated by the rebels during the American Revolution. He fought throughout the war as a captain in the Queen's Rangers, later studied law in London, and was appointed a judge of the New Brunswick Supreme Court in 1789. Over the succeeding years, he accumulated several thousand acres of land and established an estate called the Barony. During his long life he was appointed to a number of offices in the government, including Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1822. He was a man of strong political convictions who played a significant role in the society of the new Province of New Brunswick.
