| Background: |
The first Chief Surveyor or Surveyor-General of Nova Scotia, Charles Morris, was appointed on 25 September 1749. In 1781 he was succeeded by his son, Charles Morris II, who held the office at the time of the arrival and settlement of the Loyalists in 1783.

Official correspondence of Charles Morris II with the Deputy Surveyors and others regarding surveys and grants of land to Loyalist and other settlers. Several prominent Loyalist names appear frequently, including: Amos Botsford, Benjamin Marston, and Major [Gilford] Studholme. The exact dates of the letterbook are, 27 January 1783 - 21 July 1784. This is one of three related volumes with the inclusive dates being January 27, 1783 - April 11, 1845.
