| Background: |
In 1784, Sydney County was established from a part of Halifax County. In 1836 Guysborough County, taking its name from the Township of Guysborough, which was named in honour of Sir Guy Carleton, was created from the lower district of Sydney County. The upper district continued to be called Sydney County until 1863 when the name was changed to Antigonish County. In 1785 the Inferior Court of Common Pleas and the Court of General Sessions of the Peace were established at Manchester.

The information contained on this microfilm reel concerns that portion of Sydney County which, after 1836, became Guysborough County. Districts included are Guysborough, Manchester, Country Harbour, Antigonish, Tracada Pomket (Tracadie Pomquet) and Harbour Abushee (Havre Boucher), Gutt of Canso and Cape Lewis. The business of the Court included: proclamations; petitions; regulations; court cases and decisions; and lists of local officeholders appointed by District.
