In 1798 the Executive Council of Upper Canada ruled that all grants of land made after December 22, 1792, would be subject to a fee of sixpence per acre except for certain privileged persons. "United Empire Loyalists, their Sons and Daughters, and Military Claimants" were excused from payment of the fee.

The Registers of Fiats and Warrants U.E. and M.C. are arranged in numerical order which follows a chronological sequence.
The information that is given for each person's name includes the following: place of residence; status (yeoman spinster, etc.); son or daughter of a Loyalist including the name of the Loyalist parent; the Order in Council date; number of acres granted; location (lot, concession, township); date of location; and description.
A married woman is listed under her married name, but her husband's first name is given, as is the name of her Loyalist father, his place of residence, and usually whether he is living or deceased.
