Journals : 1825-1840.

            The Constitutional Act of 1791 divided the old Province of Quebec  into Upper and Lower Canada.  The newly appointed Lieutenant Governor, John Graves Simcoe, issued the proclamation dividing the Province on July 16, 1792.
A colonial government was established with a Lieutenant Governor appointed Executive and Legislative Councils and an elected Legislative Assembly.  The first general election for this Assembly was held in August 1792 and the Parliament met at Newark (Niagra-on-the Lake) on September 17, 1792.  In 1797, the seat of government was moved to York (Toronto).  The Journals of the Legislature's early sessions were regularly kept, but not all have survived the passage of time.
            

            The Journals of the House of Assembly for 1825-1840 inclusive, with an index and several volumes of appendices, have been microfilmed.  They provide a record of the business transacted by the early government of Upper Canada and form a glimpse into the lives of the people of that era.  They contain many thousands of names of Crown Grantees and other early settlers of Ontario.

The Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario for 1910 contains the Journals of the Legislative Council for Upper Canada from 1792-1794, 1789-1808, 1810-1812, 1814, and 1819. This volume is also available in the Government Documents Department of the Harriet Irving Library.
