Background:

Petitions submitted to the Executive Council of Upper Canada and the United Province of Canada by applicants for land grants and leases, 1791-1867, were referred to the Land Committee and came to form a distinct series of records from other submissions to the Executive Council proper.

Contents:

The Petitions include a variety of reports, certificates, and other documentation submitted in support of individual requests for land, as well as occasional lists of settlers. 

A list of petitioners appears at the beginning of each volume. 

The series should be used in conjunction with the Minute Books which record the Land Committee's decision on each Petition.

Notes:

Petitions referred to the District Land Boards, prior to the establishment of a centralized system for land grants, are to be found in NAC RG 1, L 4, which is available in the Loyalist Collection.

Petitions for land grants submitted to the Land Committee of the Executive Council of Quebec and Lower Canada: 1764-1841, together with related and supportive documentation, are to be found in NAC Series RG 1, L 3 L, 1637-1842. These Lower Canada records form a related series which is available in the Loyalist Collection.
