Henry John Boulton was born and educated in London, England, and called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1816. He succeeded John Beverley Robinson as solicitor general in 1818, and in 1829 became attorney general, again succeeding Robinson. In 1833 he became chief justice of Newfoundland. Later, he returned to Upper Canada, resumed his law practice in Toronto, was elected to the Legislative Assembly, and in 1846 was appointed to the Executive Council. |

The reel consists, primarily, of family correspondence referring to the Napoleonic Wars, the War of 1812, and political and private matters. Boulton writes, frequently, to his brother D'Arcy Boulton of York, 1811-1816. Also included are commissions, 1818-1833; a depiction of the crest of H.J. Boulton; and a genealogical chart of the Boulton family tracing their roots back to England. |
