- Background:
Francis Goring came to Quebec as a clerk in the Quartermaster General's Office of Gabriel Christie and brought with him a group of artificers whose names are recorded in the Papers. Goring left his position soon after his arrival and moved to the Niagara area where he served as clerk for Thomas Robinson, George Forsyth and Edward Pollard. From 1800-1810 he was employed by Robert Hamilton. He took up land near Queenston in 1784 and was there as late as 1833 at the age of 79 years.

The reel contains the papers of Francis Goring and includes: a list of artificers brought to Quebec from England in 1776; correspondence as clerk to Thomas Robinson and later as clerk for George Forsyth and Edward Pollard, 1777-1789; papers relating to Goring's services performed for Robert Hamilton of Queenston, Upper Canada, 1800-1810; a petition for a land deed, 1833; notebook covering Goring's house and farm expenses, accounts and memorandum, 1790-1794; notebook concerning deliveries, arranged alphabetically, 1803; and notebooks-miscellanies no. 11 and no. 31 with poems, short stories and maxims.
There is an index at the beginning of miscellanies no. 11 and no. 31. The correspondence, accounts, and several notebooks are arranged in chronological order.
