Background: | Peter Clements (1739-1832), a Loyalist, was born at Cortlandt Manor near Yorktown, New York, and served as a captain in the King's American Regiment during the American Revolution. He received a town lot in Parrtown (Saint John) in 1784, but did not settle there, and later a lot in Fredericton. However, eventually he settled in Douglas Parish, York County, and built a house which he called "Claremont." He married Abigail Palmer (1749-1834) and they had three sons and four daughters. His children married into the following families: Bedell, Bradley, Hatheway, Morehouse, Brickendon, Allen, and Hubbard. Peter served as a magistrate for York County and received a captain's half-pay as a former officer of a British regiment. |
Contents: | The reel contains material pertaining to the Clements and related families. It includes an indenture, 1786, between John Baptist Goodin, his wife, and Peter Clements; a map showing a portion of the lands granted on the north side of the St. John River opposite Fredericton signed by surveyor general George Sproule; Peter Clement's will dated 1832; a plan showing granted and surveyed lots in the parishes of Douglas, St. Mary's and Maugerville in York and Sunbury Counties, 1922; genealogies of the following families: Allen, Alleyne, Clark, Peacock, Bostwick, and Brinsmead; and genealogical notes and charts of the Clements family, including Peter's son George (1798-1885), who married Eliza Saunders Hubbard (her mother's maiden name was Clark). |
