The Index to British Military and Naval Records, RG 8, 1, "C Series," was first prepared on cards by the National Archives of Canada to provide access to this huge series of military records. Later the card index was microfilmed on 82 reels. The Index is arranged alphabetically by subject, which includes the names of individuals, regiments, places, or subjects, i.e. building materials, arms, orders or militia.

Interpreting the references: Each card contains a reference to the volume of "C Series" in which the full text of the material can be found. As the volume numbers are prefixed by the letter "C," they are frequently confused with the reel numbers for the material, which also begin with a "C" prefix. Researchers must be aware of the fact that only volume numbers appear in the index. Once a volume number has been identified as containing pertinent material, the researcher must consult the microfilm shelf list in print to locate the correct reel of film. The microfilm shelf list is contained in the complete finding aid to "C Series" and is located on the Loyalist Collection Finding Aids shelf.
Originals: The original index is held by Library and Archives Canada.
