            The Hill family of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, originated in Machias and later Calais, Maine. Abner Hill was an American-born emigrant who built the first mill on the St. Croix River at the beginning of the 19th century.  He also operated a merchant vessel. His sons, Abner, Jr., Stephen, Horatio and Daniel, followed their father in the family business, cutting timber, milling lumber and selling it at home and abroad.  Another son George Stillman, became a lawyer and sat in the New Brunswick General Assembly from 1831-1851. The Hills are related to the Whitney and Milberry families.            

            The reel contains 114 records relating to various members of the Hill family of St. Stephen, and a few relatives in Maine.  Many of the records centre around the business and personal affairs of George Stillman Hill of St. Stephen. The material consists of bills, accounts, deeds, lists of voters, petitions, speeches, legal papers, and correspondence, both business and personal. 
The first item on the reel is, A list of the men and women and children over ten years and under ten of the Black Refugees [Loyalists] on the North side of the Creek.
