The name Horton probably derived from Horton Hall, the residence of Georg Montagu Dunk, Second Earl of Halifax and President of the Board of Trade, who aided in the founding of Halifax. The first grant in Horton Township was made in 1759. Horton Landing was so named because it was the place where the New England Settlers landed in 1760 and laid out a town plot. In 1897 the name of Horton Landing was changed to Hortonville.
