| Background: |
Stephen Skinner was a Loyalist and general merchant in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, immediately after the American Revolution. Skinner was also one of the contractors who supervised the building of a lighthouse on McNutt Island in Shelburne Harbour. Before the Revolution, he had held the office of treasurer of eastern New Jersey and was a member of the council. His brother, Cortland Skinner, was the last royal attorney-general of New Jersey, and after the outbreak of the American Revolution, he was commissioned by the British government to raise a Loyalist regiment, the New Jersey Volunteers, which he commanded with the rank of brigadier-general throughout the war. Oliver Delancey was his first cousin. |

The ledger of Stephen Skinner, merchant, contains accounts, lists of goods, bills of exchange and other records. At the end of the film there is a list of the property Skinner owned in Nova Scotia and a list of lands purchased from black persons of Birchtown, Nova Scotia.
