- Background:
The National Archives of Canada, now Library and Archives Canada, created a finding aid to the series of selected papers relating to Canadian missions which are held on microfilm by the Archives.
- Contents:
The Finding Aid includes a history of the Society, a detailed inventory of the microfilmed material (which provides the reel number for each volume), an alphabetical list of correspondents, and an alphabetical list of places. It follows the original SPG reference and volume numbers and includes page numbers from the SPG originals or LAC's transcripts.
The detailed inventory and microfilm shelf list is divided into the following sections:
Journals of the Society, 1747-1835, which includes records of the proceedings of the Society at its general meetings.
"A" Series: contemporary copies of letters received, chiefly from the American colonies, 1702-1737.
"B" Series: letters received from North America, 1702-1799.
"C" Series: original letters received by the Society, 1630-1860; journals of the Society and appendices, 1840-1862; and Fulham Papers, containing letters from abroad addressed to the Bishop of London, 1817-1827.
"D" Series: calendar of papers relating to Canada, 1752-1858, original letters received, 1850-1886.
"E" Series: missionaries' reports, 1845-1885.
"G" Series: entry books relating to Newfoundland, 1842-1889.
"X" Series: journals, 1836-1847, and a letterbook, 1839-1846, of the Upper Canada Clergy Society. The Society was founded in 1835, and after 1840 it functioned as a branch committee of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts.
