The Provincial Secretary's Memorandum Book is a tiny notebook containing cryptic entries giving the date, subject, and in some cases, the costs involved for each notation. The entries relate to all matters that came to the Secretary's attention and provide a fascinating window into the duties performed by this official during the first years of settlement.
Included in the notations are references to commissions; memorials; appointments; correspondence and postage; marriage bonds and licenses; financial accounts; supplies, e.g. hay, lumber, etc.; a list of aldermen for St. John, 1790; and many references to requests for land and other land transactions. |
