Background:

In 1797 the first Heir and Devisee Commission was established by statute to hear and determine claims to land by heirs, devisees and assignees of the original nominees of the Crown in cases where a Patent had not been issued. 

An Act of 1805 established a second Heir and Devisee Commission and its mandate was renewed many times until the Commission was officially abolished in 1911, although the last sitting of the Commission was held in 1895.
