Background: | The Presbyterian congregation of Newark (Niagara) was founded in 1791, in a town that was the Capital of Upper Canada from 1792-1796. A meeting house was constructed in 1792 and a church was completed in 1795. A school was opened in 1802 and was the only building on the site to survive the destruction of the Town in the War of 1812-1814. The present church was built in 1831, and with the exception of recent restoration, it remains unaltered in design. |
